Profile:

The Italian National Research Council (CNR) is a public organization; its duty is to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge growth and of its applications for the scientific, technological, economic and social development of the Country.

The scientific activity of the Institute for Structure of Matter (ISM) originates from the integration of the traditional activities of the former Institute for Structure of Matter (ISM) and the Institute for Materials Chemistry (ICMAT) in the field of synthesis and characterization of innovative materials, which are produced and studied in the different institute locations with particular attention to their functionalities and their applications in the field of advanced devices. The research fields of the Institute are: Chemistry and physics of functional materials, such as molecular materials and organic-inorganic hybrids, magnetic and superconductor materials, semiconductor materials for microelectronics and photonics; Structural and surface diagnostics, particularly nanoscopic and spectroscopic diagnostics of innovative materials relevant to cultural heritage and biological systems; Synchrotron radiation.

Research activities in the Materials and Devices Department include:

  • X-ray photonics
  • Nanostructured magnetic materials
  • Magnetic, electronic and functional properieties of atomic size aggregates
  • Hybrid organic-inorganic materials
  • Functionalized surfaces, interfaces, molecular recognition and catalysis
  • Local scanning probe microscopies on nanostructured systems and biological materials
