Profile: | IMEC (Interuniversity Micro-electronics Center vzw) is an independent research organization based in Leuven, Belgium. It was established as a non-profit organization in 1984 by the state government of Flanders in Belgium. Today, it is one of the largest independent R&D organizations in its field, worldwide, with a yearly revenue of 240M€ and staff of over 1500. Its mission is to perform R&D ahead of industrial use by 3 to 10 years in the field of microelectronics, nanotechnology, design methods and -technologies for ICT systems. CMOS based research for the 32nm node and beyond is performed in IMEC’s 300mm clean room. IMEC has a long background in nonvolatile memories both of the floating gate and the charge trapping type. At the end of the 80s, a new embedded Flash technology (HIMOS?) which uses source-side hot-electron injection in split-gate devices was developed. In the 90s and 00s this technology was fully integrated in several technology generations, partially under the ESPRIT-APBB (1989-1994) and the MEDEA+ Crescendo programme (2001-2002). In recent years the activities on charge trapping memories for scaling beyond 32nm have been ramped up considerably. Next to its research on DRAM and Flash memories, IMEC is also investigating options for future high-density non-volatile memories. The current research focuses on phase-change RAM and on metaloxide- and organic-based resistive switching RAM. |
